The Ritual of Jala Neti: A Step-by-Step Guide

Jala Neti, the ancient yogic practice of nasal cleansing, is a simple yet powerful ritual for maintaining respiratory health and enhancing mental clarity. What You Need:

  1. A neti pot – traditionally ceramic or metal, but plastic options are also available.

  2. Lukewarm water (about body temperature).

  3. Non-iodized salt (sea salt or rock salt).


Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Prepare the Solution: Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt into one cup of lukewarm water. Ensure the solution is well mixed and not too concentrated, as this could cause discomfort.

  2. Find a Comfortable Position: Stand over a sink and tilt your head slightly to one side. Keep your mouth open to breathe naturally.

  3. Insert the Neti Pot: Place the spout of the neti pot into the upper nostril. Pour the saline solution gently, allowing it to flow through the nasal passage and exit through the lower nostril.

  4. Switch Sides: Repeat the process on the other nostril, tilting your head in the opposite direction.

  5. Blow Your Nose: Once both nostrils are cleansed, gently blow your nose to remove any remaining water or mucus. Avoid forceful blowing.

  6. Dry the Nasal Passages: To avoid any residual moisture, practice Kapalabhati (skull-shining breath) by exhaling forcefully but gently a few times.
